Stockholm Habilitation Unit
The Stockholm Habilitation Unit provides support for children aged two to six with motor disabilities. We also support the children’s communication and social development.
Our goal is to help each child develop and succeed in everyday life. We work closely with the child’s legal guardians and preschool to create good conditions for learning and participation.
Activities
The Stockholm Habilitation Unit complements the Region’s Habilitation centre (Habilitering & Hälsa). We offer intensive training over one or more training periods. Children come here for group training two days a week. The Stockholm Habilitation Unit is located on Kungsholmen, near Fridhemsplan.
We are targeting children who
- are between two and six years old
- have a motor disability
- are in contact with a habilitation centre in Region Stockholm
- live in Stockholm County
- thrive and develop through interaction with other children
- can follow simple instructions.
The team at the Stockholm Habilitation Unit includes an occupational therapist, physiotherapists, speech therapist, and special education teachers. Children who require treatment from more than one of our therapists are given priority.

Collaboration
During a training session, the child comes to the habilitation unit accompanied by an adult. In most cases, it is usually someone from the child’s preschool. The child’s legal guardians also attend the training a few times per training period. The staff at the habilitation unit also make home and preschool visits to provide ongoing support regarding the child’s training.
This approach is based on the child’s legal guardians and preschool working together to set goals for the training and collaborating to achieve them. At the end of the training period, we follow up the goals together.
Application
The program has two training periods per year. A training period lasts about 20 weeks in the spring and about 15 weeks in the autumn. The deadline for applications for the autumn training period is 10 April and for the spring 10 October.
It is the child’s guardian who applies for a place at the habilitation unit. When a child is enrolled in a training period with us, we temporarily assume responsibility for their habilitation from Habilitering & Hälsa. This means that we handle everything from training and assistive device fittings to home visits, preschool visits, measurements and assessments. However, the psychologist and social worker contact remain at the child’s regular Habilitation centre.
Applications can be submitted at any time during the year. It is possible to apply for two periods using the same form, but you will receive a decision for one period at a time. The catchment area is Stockholm County. For children residing outside the municipality of Stockholm, a financial agreement with their home municipality is required.
